Local Impact, Lasting Legacy: Supporting Regional Artisans & Makers

There's a moment in every project when a space transforms from beautiful to truly meaningful. 🌟 It's not always when the chandelier is hung or the custom sofa is delivered. Often, it's when a handcrafted piece arrives—something made by skilled hands just miles from where it will live—that makes all the difference. 🤌

On this #MakeADifferenceDay, I've been reflecting on the profound ripple effect that happens when we choose to work with local artisans and makers. Every custom dining table, hand-thrown ceramic vessel, or forged iron fixture represents more than exceptional craftsmanship. It represents a family supported, a tradition preserved, and a community strengthened. 🤩

The Story Behind the Work

Last spring, we were designing a living space for a client who wanted to feel settled in their new construction home and their home to feel rooted in place. New construction can often feel sterile, and it takes intentional design to turn a builder-finished structure to a lived in, welcoming home. Rather than source everything from established brands, we partnered with Bruce, a woodworker with a local workshop. He created a stunning live-edge console table and floating shelves from fallen black walnut. We were able to choose the piece of timber and mark the exact sections of wood—choosing the interesting shapes and wood grains—we wanted for these custom pieces. The salvaged wood that the client had a hand in choosing combined with Bruce’s care and craftsmanship brought history, warmth, and personality into this new home. 🏡

Beyond the Transaction

When we commission work from regional makers, we're investing in something that transcends a single project. We're supporting:

💫 Economic Opportunity: Small studios and independent craftspeople reinvest in their local economies. The furniture maker buys lumber from a regional mill. The textile artist sources natural dyes from local farms. The metalworker employs people who need flexible work arrangements. The upholsterer trains an apprentice, passing along skills to the next generation.

👣 Cultural Preservation: Many traditional techniques—hand-blocked printing, lost-wax bronze casting, traditional upholstery—survive only because makers can earn a living practicing them. Each commission helps ensure these art forms aren't lost to history.

🌱 Environmental Responsibility: Shorter supply chains create sustainability and mean reduced carbon footprints. Pieces built to last for generations counter our throwaway culture. Materials sourced locally often carry stories of responsible stewardship.

Authentic Connection: There's something irreplaceable about knowing the person who shaped the objects you live with. Our clients often develop ongoing relationships with the artisans we introduce them to, commissioning new pieces as their needs evolve. Clients also feel deeply connected to their one-of-a-kind pieces.

The Luxury of Meaning

True luxury isn't just about exclusivity or price point. It's about depth of meaning, quality of experience, and positive impact. Clients investing in artisan-made pieces are not simply furnishing a home—they're becoming patrons in the most meaningful sense of the word. 😍

I think of the local ceramic artist who markets his own creations while also teaching his craft to aspiring makers and sharing his passion for hand-made, functional, and beautiful art. Or the painter who is able to transition from part-time to full-time pursuit of their passion. Or the upholsterer/draper who could open their own workroom after a series of commissions provided steady income. Or the metalworker who launched a youth apprenticeship program once his business stabilized.💥

These aren't just feel-good stories. They're examples of how the choices we make as designers—and the choices our clients make in partnering with us—create tangible, lasting impact.♾️

An Invitation

🫵 This #MakeADifferenceDay, I'm challenging myself and our design community to deepen our commitment to regional makers. Can we dedicate a percentage of each project budget to local artisans? Can we connect emerging makers with opportunities to grow their businesses? Can we document and share their stories so others discover their work?

For homeowners reading this: the next time you're furnishing a space, consider looking beyond the catalog. Seek out the furniture maker in the next county, the textile artist at the farmers market, the potter whose studio you pass on weekend drives. Ask your designer to help you discover regional talent. The result will be spaces that don't just look beautiful—they carry meaning in every carefully crafted detail. 🤌

The homes we create today become the legacy we leave tomorrow. When we choose to support local makers, we're ensuring that legacy includes thriving creative communities, preserved traditions, and economic opportunity where it's needed most.

That's luxury worth investing in. 🫶
